ABOUT MS (Mutiple Sclerosis)

MS is a chronic and progressive disease of the central nervous system.

The ability of the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord to communicate is effected, as the body attacks the fatty substance which protects them (called Myelin).

For this reason it is considered an auto-immune disease as normal tissue is mistakenly being targeted.

There is no pattern for the course of MS and every person may have different symptoms with varying degrees of disability.

For many, this leads to total dependence on others for every day care.

TREATMENT

While there is no cure for MS, there is mounting evidence that the disease can be halted/put into remission using HSCT to reset the immune system.

HSCT (hematopoietic stem cell transplant) is a bone marrow transplant with strong chemotherapy to erradicate the immune system, then OWN bone marrow stem cells are used to reboot the immune system.

It takes 3 months with a 12 month recovery period.

It is the same treatment that has been used for Leukemia patients for 25 years.

There are now worldwide trials for MS with this treatment.

About 650 people have had HSCT for MS in the last 12 years... 85% have halted their progression, 14% had no benefit and 1% mortality.

Very few people have had it in Australia, and many are now travelling overseas for the same treatment. Unfortunately, obtaining the treatment in Australia is a long process that many cannot wait for.
